[00:00:10] Speaker B: Welcome to the Gospel Threads podcast, where we uncover gospel themes woven through all of scripture and explore what they mean for our lives today.
[00:00:24] Speaker C: Welcome to Gospel Threads. I'm Allie.
[00:00:27] Speaker A: I'm Stephanie.
[00:00:27] Speaker B: And I'm Cheyenne.
[00:00:28] Speaker C: And we are so excited to dive into season two.
A new season means that we are exploring a new theme. Last season, we talked about clothing, so this season we picked a new theme to talk about. We're going to find a lot of stories in scripture of this theme, and this is actually uncharted waters for the three of us, because this is our first time studying this theme.
And I just. I think it's really gonna make a splash with our listeners, though. I think they're gonna love it. Today we're just gonna get our feet wet as we talk about this theme. We're gonna just wet the tongue, you might say, during this little trailer.
[00:01:06] Speaker A: In case you're parched, we'll give you some biblical stories to think about.
[00:01:10] Speaker C: Good job going with the flow here.
But this theme, it's so robust that Even with, like, 10 episodes, I think it's just gonna be like a drop in the ocean, but I don't.
[00:01:20] Speaker A: We're just gonna hit the surface of it.
[00:01:21] Speaker C: Yes. Yes, we are. I don't wanna rain on any.
I think that it's still gonna be really good. So let's just jump in the deep end. Let's make some waves. I'm gonna tell our listeners what our theme is about.
[00:01:31] Speaker A: I'm sure they have no idea.
[00:01:33] Speaker B: I cannot keep up with you two. And you came even unprepared for this, and you jumped right in.
[00:01:40] Speaker C: She sure did. So if you guessed that our theme is about covenants, you're wrong. It's not about covenants. It's about water.
I don't know why anybody would have thought covenants, but we're talking about water.
[00:01:52] Speaker A: We are, yes.
[00:01:55] Speaker B: It's gonna make a splash. Is that one of the things that you think it's gonna be?
[00:01:58] Speaker C: Splash.
[00:01:59] Speaker B: Okay.
[00:02:00] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:02:00] Speaker B: Great.
[00:02:01] Speaker C: Yep.
[00:02:01] Speaker B: That was well done, Allie. Thank you. Well done. I wonder if they caught on.
[00:02:05] Speaker C: Probably not. It wasn't very obvious.
[00:02:08] Speaker A: Pretty subtle.
[00:02:10] Speaker B: So, water.
[00:02:11] Speaker C: Yeah.
Why are we talking about water?
[00:02:16] Speaker A: So way at the beginning, read again. In Genesis 1. Right. The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
[00:02:21] Speaker C: That's true.
[00:02:22] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:02:23] Speaker C: I love a theme that starts in. In the first three chapters of Genesis. That's good. Yeah.
[00:02:27] Speaker B: Yeah. And it's in the end, too. There's the river of life. Yes. Or tree of life. Is there. There's a river of life. There's some rivers. There's some rivers. Okay. See, we are doing this teaser having not yet decided what passages we're going to be talking about yet.
[00:02:44] Speaker A: We've done a deep dive into the scriptures. See what, all the water.
[00:02:47] Speaker B: Yes. We'll be diving in together to find that out. But I think. I mean, we. There are lots of water stories. I even was asking my son Isaiah on the way to school today. Like, what water stories do you think of?
He thought of the storms with the disciples and Jesus calming the storms. He thought of the Red Sea.
What are some that you guys think of?
[00:03:10] Speaker C: Well, as I was thinking about this, I thought of, like, three categories of water stories. Can I share my category?
[00:03:16] Speaker A: Sure.
[00:03:16] Speaker C: Okay. Since I know Cheyenne loves alliteration, I came up with an alliteration.
I think one of the things that we see about God through water stories is we see his provision.
He created us with a need for water, and he provides that many times. There's a few miracles in Exodus where the Israelites are in the wilderness and they need water and he gives them water and he makes the water sweet so that they could drink it.
And there's a few other times, too. I think of the woman at the well when Jesus meets her and says, what does he say? I'll give you living water and you'll thirst no more.
So we see his provision. We also see his power.
Like in Exodus, the ten plagues. The first plague that God, that God puts on the Egyptians is he turns their water to blood. The last thing that he does is he parts the Red Sea when they leave. So we see his incredible power. And then there's the Jesus stories that you were talking about, too. Calming the storm.
And then the third one. Oh, what was my third one? Power provision and punishment. Punishment is another one.
The flood, Noah. And the flood is an obvious one.
[00:04:33] Speaker A: Even the Red Sea is punishment.
[00:04:35] Speaker C: Yeah, that's true. Such a good point. Yeah, definitely.
[00:04:39] Speaker B: Yeah.
[00:04:39] Speaker C: Yeah. So those were. Those were the three categories I saw a lot of. I'm sure there's more, but what other. What other things come to mind?
[00:04:45] Speaker A: Yeah, so it made me think of. We're kind of in Easter week here right now. So it made me think of in the. On the cross, it says, Jesus's side was pierced and out flowed blood and water.
[00:04:55] Speaker C: Yeah.
[00:04:56] Speaker B: Oh, yeah, that's a good one. I was thinking of another P word, actually, just to, you know, match you, since I wasn't able to keep up with all of your water idioms and expressions of cheesiness, which we all Love.
I think of purification, you know, I think like baptism. And I think of like Naaman the leper. Who. Or na. I don't know when. Okay. If there's two. Two vowels, the same vowel appears twice.
[00:05:28] Speaker A: It should say the. It should say its name. Like when there's double E, it's the E sound.
[00:05:32] Speaker B: Like what about a double A?
[00:05:34] Speaker C: But sometimes the double A is ah or maybe.
[00:05:37] Speaker A: Yeah.
[00:05:38] Speaker B: I don't know.
[00:05:39] Speaker C: So it could be Naaman or Na. Men.
[00:05:45] Speaker B: Yes.
[00:05:45] Speaker C: Okay.
[00:05:46] Speaker B: I think so. I think I spelled it wrong here, so I'm not sure. But anyways, he's like a leper. And he's told to wash himself in the Jordan river seven times. Um, so it's also healing too.
[00:05:57] Speaker C: The tabernacle in the temple too, there was a lot of washing. The priests had to do.
[00:06:00] Speaker B: Yes. They had like a whole basin.
[00:06:02] Speaker C: I think that the.
[00:06:02] Speaker B: In the temple, the basin was actually even like huge.
[00:06:05] Speaker C: Was it?
[00:06:06] Speaker A: I believe.
[00:06:06] Speaker B: I think so.
So, yeah, there's definitely a lot with. That had to do with purification and washing and even. I think we were talking. So we're reading through Leviticus right now and it was talking about how they sprinkled blood on the altar, but then they would have to go back through and they would have to cleanse the altar. And so I think they're probably using water from the basin to cleanse the altar too. So anyways, that's a little obscure, but yeah, water is everywhere, I think. I don't know. Are there any other.
Any other stories that you think of?
[00:06:42] Speaker A: You guys hit on a lot of them that immediately came to mind. I'm trying to think if there are any other ones I can think of.
[00:06:47] Speaker B: Oh, I just. Psalm 23, like it's not a story, but the good shepherd, you. He leads me beside still waters. Still waters, yeah. He restores my soul.
[00:06:57] Speaker C: Yeah, there's some. There's some water imagery in psalms that go a lot of different ways. Like talking about, you know, being thirsty and getting something to drink or like being.
Psalm 30.
[00:07:07] Speaker A: Deer pants for water.
[00:07:09] Speaker B: That's Psalm 42. Yeah.
[00:07:10] Speaker C: Yeah. I can't remember what psalm it is, but where he feels like he's drowning.
[00:07:14] Speaker B: That's Psalm 42 also.
[00:07:15] Speaker C: Is that 42? Yeah. Oh, okay.
[00:07:16] Speaker B: Isn't that too. I know, yeah. Cuz it talks about thirst and then it's also. Yeah, okay. The deep calls deep at the crash of your waterfalls or some. Or crash of your waves. I can't remember exactly. Your breakers and waves. Something, something. Look it up. Well, no, Psalm 42. At least we know the reference.
Yeah, that's a good one.
I. At least my daughter's favorite verse is from Isaiah 43. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you. And through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you.
[00:07:45] Speaker C: Oh, that's beautiful.
[00:07:46] Speaker B: I know. Yeah. Yeah.
[00:07:49] Speaker A: Moses being placed in the basket in the river and God taking care of him.
[00:07:53] Speaker B: Oh, yeah. Moses has several water stories, doesn't he?
[00:07:55] Speaker A: He does, yeah.
[00:07:56] Speaker B: Wow. Ooh, this is interesting. Yeah.
[00:07:59] Speaker C: Jesus turning water to wine. Just thought of that one, too.
[00:08:02] Speaker A: I think that's his first miracle, right?
[00:08:05] Speaker B: Yeah, I think so.
[00:08:06] Speaker C: That's right.
[00:08:06] Speaker A: It's like the star of his ministry as an adali.
[00:08:10] Speaker B: And then even in Acts Paul's shipwreck, where none of the sailors lose their lives, and it's like 200. 200 of them have this, like, shipwreck, and he saves them. I think there's a lot here.
[00:08:23] Speaker C: Yeah. It's gonna be fun. It's gonna be fun. Season.
[00:08:25] Speaker B: Cool. I can't wait.
[00:08:26] Speaker C: Yeah. Okay. Well, if you.

And now we actually get to look ahead because this coming year, 2026 in September, we are doing another women's conference that is centered around water called All In Following Jesus beyond the Shore. And so we will be looking at three different water stories for that event, too. Diving De.
